Ebbie Means Bryce was born Feb. 9, 1916, the fourth of 10 children, to Carl and Bertie Means Bryce in Redlands (Ashurst). He passed away Sept. 5, 2005, at home in Thatcher surrounded by his family.

He grew up in the Ashurst/Fort Thomas area of the Valley. He met his future wife and love of his life, Ara Knight, while attending school in Fort Thomas in 1931. They were married in Lordsburg, N.M., in 1933 and sealed for time and eternity in the Mesa LDS Temple in October 1965.

He was a lifetime member of the LDS Church, where he held several positions, included that of a much-loved door greeter at sacrament meetings at the old Church Street Chapel.

Ebbie worked in many different occupations during his life before working for the State Highway Department. He worked there as a mechanic 26 years, retiring after suffering a back injury in a car accident.

His hobbies were many and included woodworking, building wooden toys for his grandchildren, fishing, camping and Dutch-oven cooking. He enjoyed making wooden bowls and vases in his later years. Ebbie also loved being surrounded by his family and told them many stories of his early life.

Ebbie is survived by his wife of 72 years, Ara; children, Lavar (Glenna), Steve (Deberrah) and Kay (Lamont) Redford of Thatcher, Carl (Marva) of Central and Tommy (Peggy) of Kearny; sister, Beulah Boutwell of Safford; brother, Ed Bryce of Arlington, Penn.; 23 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren, 25 great-great-grandchildren and one great-great-great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his eldest son, Bobbie, and daughter-in-law, Lorena of Kearny and great-granddaughter Ashley Beals of Central.

Services were Sept. 10 at the Thatcher LDS Stake Center on Reay Lane in Thatcher. Concluding services and interment followed at the Thatcher Cemetery.
