Herber Augustus Powers, 61, of north of Villisca died at 7 a.m. Friday at the Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, following an operation for strangulation intestines to which he submitted Thursday afternoon of last week. He was taken to the hospital Thursday noon after he had suffered a sudden acute attack of intestinal trouble which caused his death.
Funeral services for Mr. Powers were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Villisca Methodist Church and were conducted by the Re.v C. f. Smith of Red Oak, a former pastor of the Holes Chapel Church which Mr. Powers and his family attended. The singing was by a quartet composed of H. C. Lindell, F. L. Means, Roy Means, and H. H. Nordyke, with Mrs. H. H. Nordyke as accompanist.
The pall bearers were Fletcher Gourley, J. Q. Focht, T. T. Thompson, O. M. Moody, George Johnson and C. A. Danielson. Burial was made in the Arlington Cemetery.
Herbert Augustus Powers, oldest son of James and Victoria Higgins Powers, was born November 18, 1872 on a farm three and one half miles southwest of Villisca were he spent his childhood days, moving later with is parents and family to the vicinity north of Villisca where he grew to manhood and spent the rest of his life.
He was married February 10, 1908 to Mrs. Anna Larson and to this union four children were born. They are Donovan of San Diego, California, Ruthella Givan of Grant, and James and Doris at home. A step son, Harold Larson was reared in his home.
He is survived by his wife and children, one brother and three sisters, who are Clint Powers, Mrs. Zella Collier, and Mrs. Ethel Fiddler, all of Villisca, and Mrs. Vivian Brown Themopolis, Wyoming. He also leaves 2 grandchildren, Audrey and Lyman Larson of Villisca. One brother and one sister preceded him in death.
Mr. Powers united with the Holmes chapel Church 30 years ago and in 1928 had his membership transferred to the Methodist Church in Villisca. His son, Donovan and is sister Mrs. Brown were unable to be here for the funeral.
