Death of a Pioneer
John D. Farney died yesterday morning at the home of his son Charles at Hutchinson, following an illness of sometime due to general old age. He was in his eightieth year of life.
He was born in Kentucky, but most of his early life was spent in Ohio, where he was married and his first children were born. He then moved to Macon County, Missouri [should read, "Illinois"], and from there came to Kansas, settling on a farm southeast of Mulvane [1874]. Twenty-four years ago he came to Mulvane [approx. 1896], and maintained a home here up till the death of his wife about four years ago, and since then he has been dividing his time among his children. He leaves two sons, Charles of Hutchinson, and Warren of this city, and two daughters, Mrs. Ella Pennick and Mrs. John Miller of this city, besides his adopted son Bert, of Towanda. Five children have preceded him in death. There are quite a number of grandchildren. His son Charles happened to be in Louisiana at the time of his [John's] death where he was working on the Inter-church movement, and the funeral will be held here tomorrow afternoon if the son gets here in time. The body will arrive here this evening from Hutchinson.
Additional Notes: John was the son of Malinda Duncan Farney and David Radcliffe Farney.
Many thanks to Lisa Hagen for providing the photo.
