Samuel Barns
Samuel Barns an old and respected citizen of Bowling township, died suddenly yesterday morning at the residence of his son in law, Mr. Joseph Gotobed. He was up at breakfast as usual and afterwards went into the yard. Upon returning he fell on the floor and expired in a few moments. Deceased was born in Cambridgeshire, England, and was 86 years, 9 months, and 24 days old. He came to America in 1855 and for the past 18 years has been a resident of the county. He was the father of seven children, six of whom are living-- two in the old country, three in Nebraska, and Mrs. Gotobed of Bowling. He was an upright and honorable man, and had the respect of everyone who knew him.

From the Nebraska bio of his son Samuel Barnes it says about Samuel Senior: They lived in Cleveland,Ohio for six or seven years. Four years later he came to Rockford Illinois, where his wife died, after which he made his home with his daughter in Rock Island county, Illinois, until his death, which occurred when he was nearly eighty-seven years old.
Samuel was the son of William and Mary Roberts Barnes. He married Marianne Goode/Gogue in 1823 in Manea Parish, Cambridgeshire, England.
They arrived in America Dec. 16, 1854 aboard the ship Albert Gallatin, along with their daughter Mary, son Samuel, daughter Betsy & her husband Joseph Gotobed. They settled first in Cleveland, Ohio, where their daughter Mary Barnes married William Price. Both families are in the 1860 census in Cleveland.
In the 1870 census Samuel Barnes is a widower living in Bowling Township, Rock Island county, Illinois with the Gotobed's.

Edith Barnes, born 1824 in Manea, Cambridgeshire, England. She married William Shivers about 1841 and died Mar. 19. 1889 in Thorney, Cambridgeshire, England.
William Barnes, born 1827 Manea, Chatteris, Cambridgeshire, England, married Elizabeth Anderson, 29 April 1848 in Wretton, Norfolk, England, and died between 1870 and 1881.
John Barnes, born 1830, Manea Parish, Cambridgeshire, he married Eliza Braybrooke, Dec 1849 in North Witchford, Cambridgeshire, England, death date unknown.
