Carlisle, May 9 - The news of the death of Colonel James Chestnut reached here this morning. He died at his home near Cleversburg on Saturday at the age of seventy-three years, after a lingering illness of cancer. He represented this district in the state senate for the terms of '76 and '78, and occupied a prominent position in the Democratic party of this county.

He was a native of that section and had read medicine when a young man, although he practiced for only a few years. He then turned his attention to farming and business affairs, and later on took a prominent part in politics.

He is survived by a wife and eight children. The funeral will take place tomorrow; internment at Spring Hill cemetery, Shippensburg.
