She moved to Mecosta County as a child when her family built a sawmill North of Stanwood. Arlene graduated from Big Rapids High School in 1945 and married Harold S. Chipman in 1947. The couple made their home on the family farm in Morley that they operated for many years.
In 1960 Arlene began working at the Bookstore at Ferris Institute. When she retired in 1989 she was the assistant manager of the Rankin Center Bookstore at Ferris State University.
During retirement, Arlene loved to travel with her husband, Harold, in their RV, making many trips south to Alabama, Florida, and South Carolina.
She was a devout member of the Northland United Methodist Church. Arlene's love for the Lord was shown by making other people's day better. She was always waiting on everyone, family and friends alike, making those around her feel special.
Arlene will always be remembered as a true servant of the Lord, her memory will be cherished by those who survive, including her three children, Linda (Jim) Biller of Big Rapids, Kevin Chipman of Big Rapids, Brian (Caroline) Chipman of Canton; eight grandchildren, Justin Nitz, Kimberly Nitz, Ryan (Angie) Biller, Scott (Jennifer) Biller, Brent (Megan) Biller, Lauren Chipman, Evan Chipman, Katelyn Chipman; five great-grandchildren, Kyle, Lynsey, Cole, Broden, Brooks Biller; and several nieces and nephews.
Arlene was preceded in death by the love of her life and husband of 66 years, Harold S. Chipman, who has been waiting for her in heaven since his passing on December 12, 2013; her parents; a daughter, Patricia Chipman Nitz in 1987; and a brother, Raymond Emil Shafer.
Funeral services will take place 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 21 at the Northland United Methodist Church in Stanwood with Pastor Dominic Tommy officiating. The family will greet friends on Friday, June 20th from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home in Big Rapids. Burial will be at the Aetna Township Cemetery in Morley.
