John P. "Mali" Conjar, Sr., 90, of Swatara Twp., passed on to eternal life on Saturday, August 7, 2010, in Harrisburg Hospital.

He was born January 22, 1920, the fourth son of the late Lawrence and Barbara Kraisian Conjar.

John was a WW II veteran, earning the rank of Sergeant, having served in the Army as a Marksman Gunner with 633 Tank Destroyer Bn. After being injured, he was transferred to the Air Force as a physical training instructor at Scott Field, IL.

John was a retired employee of Bethlehem Steel Corp. with over 41 years of service and retired as a heater in a 20-inch merchant mill.

He was a strong union member of United Steelworkers of America Local 1688 starting out as a steward, committeeman, then financial secretary of the local.

He was a graduate of Harrisburg Catholic High School, prepped at Harrisburg Academy, and attended Smith Technical School.

John was head coach of the semi-pro football team, "The Bressler Ramblers". It was a very successful team that had to be disbanded due to the outbreak of the Korean War.

John was a member of St. Catherine Laboure Roman Catholic Church, the Notre Dame Club of Harrisburg, Notre Dame Library, Honorary Life Member of Holy Rosary Council 869 Knights of Columbus, Capital Area Sports Hall of Fame, Steelton American Legion Post 420, and a life member of St. Lawrence Lodge No. 13 Croatian Fraternal Union and St. Aloysius Lodge No. 42, KSKJ.

John was very active in everything.

He enjoyed handyman work, Notre Dame football, singing, music, exercising, and debating. He had a passion for reading.

He is survived by his loving wife, a son, and his wife, of Evanston, IL; a daughter, of Lower Paxton Twp.; two brothers, two sisters, five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren.

John was preceded in death by his son, John P. Conjar, Jr.

Private graveside services will be held on Wednesday, August 11, 2010, at 2:00 pm in Resurrection Cemetery, West Hanover Twp.

There will be no viewing or visitation. Arrangements are being handled by Wiedeman Funeral Home, Steelton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Poor Box of St. Catherine Laboure Church, 4000 Derry St., Harrisburg, PA.
