DR. BLECH, CHICAGO PHYSICIAN 55 YEARS, DIES IN HOME AT 78
Deceased Name: Dr. Gustavus M. Blech
Dr. Gustavus M. Blech, 78, a physician with offices at 108 N. State st. and a retired colonel of the army medical corps, died yesterday in his home at 656 Wrightwood av. He began practice in Chicago in 1894, after his graduation from Barnes university, St. Louis. He volunteered for service in the Spanish-American war, and later served as an observer for the American Red Cross in the Russo-Japanese war.
Dr. Blech joined the Illinois National Guard in 1913 and organized the first Illinois field hospital, with which he served on the Mexican border. In 1917 he went overseas as the assistant division surgeon of the 33d division. He commanded a hospital at Autun, France, and later was in charge of base hospital 208 at Bordeaux. He was discharged in 1919 with the rank of colonel.
At one time Dr. Blech was editor of the journal Clinical Medicine and Surgery. He was co-author with Cornell C. Lynch, former surgeon general of the army, of Medical Tactics and Logistics. He was a member of the Hamlin Park post of the American Legion.
He leaves his widow, Nelda, and a brother, Henry, a San Francisco attorney. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel at 5208 Broadway. Burial will be in Arlington National cemetery in Fort Myers, Va.
