Reception to Fete Markham, Hansen for Utah Stake Service

A reception honoring recently-released Stake President Fred L. Markham of the Utah Stake and his first counselor, Rulen B. Hansen, will be held Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Park-University Ward, 101 W. 8OO N., Provo. Not only members of Utah Stake, but everyone interested is invited to attend, according to the new stake president, Ross B. Denham and the committee headed by Dr. Robert W. Petty. Utah Stake, .second oldest stake in the LDS Church, was formed March 19,1851 under the direction of Brigham Young. At the time it included all of Utah Valley. Since then many stakes have been formed from Utah Stake, the most recent one being Utah West Stake in 1947.

Five wards of Utah West Stake were put back into Utah Stake last Sept. 9, and two were taken out and put into Utah West Stake in a major realignment in order to equalize the membership of the two stakes.

At that time, President Markham and Counselor "Hansen" were released, with the second counselor, Mr. Denham, made president, The new counselors to Preident Denham are Louis Bandley, former counselor in West Utah Stake, and N. LaVerl Christensen, former President Markham has been
in the Utah Stake preidency for 27 years, serving as second counselor to President Victor J. Bird starting Aug. 18, 1946 and advanced to first counselor May 4, 1947. He became president of the stake Nov. 27,1960.

A native of Spanish Fork, he was reared in Provo and married Maude Dixon. He is an architect and several years ago directed the remodeling of the Provo Tabernacle. He is chairman of the architects committee directing construction of the new Washington D.C. area temple.

Mr. Hansen serves on the Provo Board of Education and recently retired after a career with U.S. Steel at Geneva Works. He was President Markham's first counselor during the 13 years the latter served as
president. His wife is the former Renon Wilson.

The committee for the public reception includes Dr. and Mrs: Petty, Mr. and Mrs. Karl A. Miller, Mr. and Mrs. Gather R. Roper and Mr. and Mrs. E. Earl Carter.

A presentation will be made to each of the two honorees in behalf of the people of Utah Sake.
