In 1958 he retired with 30 years of service as a clerk for Waterloo, Cedar Falls and Northern Railway (WCF&N).
In 1980 Charley and Elva celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary with a dinner reception in Marion. He was the father of five children; Vernon H, Freda M (McPeak), Robert C."Red", Dorothy L (Kollman), George "Duane" Hendryx. A member of the First Christian Church of Center Point.
