After an illness of about four weeks Jacob Matthew Powers, one of the pioneers of Montana and of Great Falls, as well, died last evening at 8:45 at his home, 606 Sixth avenue north, aged 75 years. His illness had not been of a seemingly critical nature until nearly the last and he had felt strong enough to be up for a time on Sunday. He was taken with a sinking spell early last evening but one of his sons was able to get in from Belt before he died while a daughter, located at Fort Benton, arrived just after death had ensued.

Mr. Powers is survived by his wife, Mary J. Powers, two sons, Llewellyn Powers, who is attending the state university at Missoula, and Walter J. Powers who is with the Mountain States Telephone & Telegraph company stationed at Belt, and two daughters, Esther M. Powers, a teacher in the Lincoln school, and Martha Powers, a teacher in the Fort Benton schools. He also leaves two brothers and two sisters, Francis T. Powers of Canton, Mont., Amni T. Powers of Seattle, Wash., Mrs. Harvey P. Keene and Mrs. Vesta P. Walker, of Canton, Mont., Mrs. M.T. Kennedy of Kimbalton, Ohio, and Miss Minta Powers of Long Beach, Cal.

The body has been removed to the undertaking rooms of the W.H. George company and the funeral will be under Masonic auspices, the time for the same not yet having been decided.

Jacob M. Powers was born at Pittsfield, Maine, January 8, 1842. He came to Montana 51 years ago last September settling at Virginia City. From 1869 until 1891 he engaged in the horse business in the Missouri valley, near Townsend, in company with his brother, Frank Powers. He was a member of the territorial assembly in 1882 and from 1882 until 1886 he ran the Helena-Fort Benton stage line in partnership with Gans & Klein, of Helena.

Twenty-five years ago he moved to Great Falls and from that time to the present he made this city his home. Since coming here he was not actively engaged in any line of business but had considerable property interests here.

Mr. Powers was very prominent in Masonic circles having joined the order in Maine when he was 21 years of age. He was a past master of Cascade lodge, 34, A.F. & A.M., had attended every meeting of the grand lodge of Montana since its organization and was the second grand patron of the Order of Eastern Star of Montana.
