Cortez enlisted on 19 Jun 1861 at Fort Wayne, Indiana for three years. He mustered in on 28 Aug 1861 to serve as Corporal in Company B, 5th Michigan Infantry. He was discharged on 7 Dec 1962 from a surgeon's certificate at Camp Petcher, Virginia. He was an engineer at the Evart Water Works. He married Rachel Broughton on 24 June 1855 in Macomb County, Michigan. His children were Samuel Martin (1856-1873), Mark Broughton b. 1859, Charlette Elizabeth Victoria b. 1865, Luke b. 1869, Ruth Ann (1870-1870), Cortez Allen Jr, b 1876, Alfred (1880-1880). He died at his home in Evart on 6th Street of Bright's disease. Cortez and his family came to Evart in the fall of 1871.
