Manerva was likely born Susan Minerva Baker at Tolland, Tolland, Connecticut the daughter of Sylvanus Baker and Marcia Webster.

Sylvanus is the son of Heman Baker and is said to have died December 25, 1824 at Windham, Bradford PA. His wife Marcia Webster born January 28, 1788 at Tolland, Tolland Connecticut the daughter of Simeon Webster and Sybil Converse (see William Holcomb Webster, 'History and Genealogy of the Gov. John Webster of Connecticut: With Numerous Portraits and Illustrations', Vol I (of 3) (Rochester, N.Y.: Rev. Melville Reuben Webster, D.D., 1915), Vol I: p 146. Marcia and husband Sylvanus followed Marcia's brother Joseph Barnes Webster (and wife Achsah Barnard) to Bradford Co, PA along with Marcia's sisters Lucia (Mrs Parley Johnson Sr), Polly (Mrs Roswell Russell). They were later followed by sister Amanda (Mrs Jacob Reel of S. Waverly, PA). Siblings Minerva (Mrs Timothy Benton Jr), Samuel, Milton, Ruth (Mrs Samuel Charter), and Lucy (Mrs Elizur Stevens Hurlbut)remained in Tolland, CT.
