Thomas Lyle Martin, Jr. (September 26, 1921 – October 8, 2009) served as president of the Illinois Institute of Technology from 1974 to 1987. Martin was born in Memphis, Tennessee. During the Second World War, he served in the US Army, rising to the rank of Captain. He received his PhD degree in electrical engineering from Stanford University. Prior to joining the IIT administration, he served as Dean of Engineering at the University of Arizona, the University of Florida and Southern Methodist University. He was a fellow of IEEE and a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering. Martin died in Irving, Texas in 2009.

Thomas Lyle Martin, Jr., who served as president of Illinois Institute of Technology from 1974 - 1987, died on October 8 at the age of 88. During his tenure as president, Martin oversaw significant growth in student enrollment, expansion of the university beyond the main campus, and the establishment of the Center for the Study of Ethics in the Professions (CSEP). A pioneer in distance education, Martin expanded the programs available at the downtown campus, acquired the Midwest College of Engineering in Wheaton, which became IIT's Rice Campus, and spearheaded a ground-breaking program to actively reach out to and recruit minority and women students in the early 1970s.

Born in Memphis in 1921, Martin served in the Army to the rank of Captain during World War II, receiving the bronze star, and completed his education with a Ph.D. from Stanford University following the war. Martin seved as dean of engineering at the University of Arizona, University of Florida and Southern Methodist University before joining IIT. Martin was a consultant to the heads of state of two foreign countries on higher education as well as author of seven books, the last published shortly before his death. He served as a director on many corporate and charitable boards. Notably, he was a founding board member of the Dallas-Ft. Worth Regional Airport. He was a fellow of the IEEE, an honoree in the Hall of Fame of the American Society for Engineering Education and a member of the National Academy of Engineering.

Martin was preceded in death by his first wife, Helene (Tootie) Martin; sister, Cynthia Cone; granddaughter, Jennifer Vahrenkamp. He is survived by his wife, Mildred (Millie) Martin; daughter, Michelle Eustice; son, Thomas L. Martin, III; grandchildren, Alexis Elaine Harper and Jason L. Hall; brothers, Samuel R. and Michael M. Martin. Private services and burial for the family were held Monday at Restland Memorial Park in Dallas. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that a donation to a university of choice be made.
