James Martin was the only son of Amelia & Charles Martin of 43 Mary Street, Hawthorn, Vic. He enlisted with his parents' consent in the Australian Imperial Force on 12 April 1915 at the age of 14 years 3 months; he told the recruiting officers that he was 18 years. He embarked from Melbourne for active service abroad on 28 June 1915 per HMAT "Berrima" (A35). He fell ill and was evacuated to the hospital ship 'Glenart Castle' on 25 October 1915. He died from the effects of syncope following enteritis that evening, aged 14 years 9 months and was buried at sea.

He was the youngest known Australian to have died in World War I.
