"HEROES OF THE DARDANELLES. PERSONAL NOTES.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Grimes, of Newstead, Brisbane, have received the following letter from Major F. Dawson, Officer Commanding A Coy., 25th Btn., A.I.F., at the Dardanelles, in which he acquaints them of the circumstances under which their son, Private Martin Patrick Grimes, met his death -

"I much regret having to write and tell you of the death of your son. He was shot by a Turkish sniper on the afternoon of September 16, while returning with others to rejoin his company. He was shot through the head, death being instantaneous. We buried him alongside some English soldiers on the slope of Beauchop's Hill. The grave has been enclosed with wire, and his comrades have erected a wooden cross over the grave. It will be some consolation for you to know that he was well liked by his comrades, and, as his commanding officer, I offer you my deepest sympathy in your sad loss. He died a soldier's death, doing his duty to king and country." - from the Brisbane Courier 13 Nov 1915 (nla.gov.au)
