Wilfred John Crane was born in Hobart, Tasmania in October, 1890. He was a plumber when he enlisted in August 1914 just after the outbreak of WW1. He had grey eyes and dark black hair. He was 5 feet 7 inches tall (1.7m) and weighed 10 stone 2lbs (64.4kg). Wilfred sailed for Egypt aboard HMAT "Geelong" on 20th October, 1914. He left behind a wife, Amelia Jane and a daughter Lila Rona. Wilfred was promoted to lance corporal on 13th March, 1915. As a member of the 12th Battalion, he was to take part in the landing at ANZAC Cove on 25th April, 1915. It was soon discovered that he was missing. His family was then informed. Despite constant enquiries over subsequent months, it was only after a court of enquiry was finally convened the following year in June, 1916 that his death became official. His body was never recovered. His name appears on Panel 34 of the Lone Pine memorial. Lest we forget.
