Richard served as a Ship's Cook, Third Class, U.S.S. Escolar (SS-294), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Keene, Cheshire County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

Richard was declared "Missing In Action" when the Escolar was probably mined in the Yellow Sea during the war. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
