2nd Lt. Waite was flying as co-pilot of a B-25 Mitchell bomber, which was based in New Guinea, named the "Dittum-Dattum II" , he was part of the famed 500th " Rough Raiders" squadron. On a low level strafing run over Momote air strip the plane was struck by AA fire, crashed and exploded, killing all aboard.
In his last letter to his parents he said he had flown 22 combat missions.
A 1939 Scottsbluff high school graduate, Lieutenant Waite starred as a pole vaulter, finishing second in the 1938 class A track and field meet in Lincoln when Scottsbluff won the state title.
