Son of Mary L. Small.

Carl served as a Aviation Ordnanceman, Third Class, U.S.S. Suwannee (CVE-27), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Rye Beach, Rockingham County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

The U.S.S. Suwannee, in the Battle of Surigao Strait, was hit by a Japanese kamikaze that crashed into her about 40 ft forward of the after elevator, opening a 10 ft hole in her flight deck.

Carl was "Killed In Action" in this attack during the war.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.

He was buried at sea.

The next day, October 26th in the Battle off Samar, the Suwannee was hit a second time by a kamikaze. The two day total crew losses were 107 dead and 160 wounded.

The Suwannee survived both attacks and the war and earned 13 battle stars during World War II.
