John served as a Chief Electrician's Mate, USS Quincy (CA-39), U.S. Navy during World War II.
He resided in Merrimack County, New Hampshire prior to the war.
The U.S.S. Quincy, in what would be known as The Battle of Savo Island, was attacked by a large Japanese naval force and caught in the crossfire of Japanese ships Aoba, Furutaka, and Tenryū, and was hit heavily and set afire. The Quincy was then hit by two torpedoes from Tenryū, causing severe damage and eventually sank.
John was declared "Missing In Action" in this battle during the war.
He was awarded the Purple Heart.
