Son of Mr. & Mrs. George J. Rogers.

Harold served as a Seaman, First Class, U.S.S. Birmingham (CL-62), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Farmington, Strafford County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

The Birmingham, during the the Battle of Leyte Gulf, was assisting the U.S.S. Princeton (CVL-23) which had been hit by a single bomb that punched through it's flight deck and hangar and then exploded. Fire's were uncontrollably burning on the Princeton.

The Birmingham suffered great topside damage from explosions on board the aircraft carrier Princeton while courageously attempting to aid that stricken vessel and lost 243 men in this incident during the war.

Harold was "Killed In Action" during this rescue attempt.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.

He was buried at sea.

Six U.S. ships and approximately 3,000 seaman were lost in the three day Battle of Leyte Gulf ( Oct. 23 - 26 ) which was a victory for the U.S. Navy:

U.S.S. Gambier Bay (CVE-73) ~ October 25th
U.S.S. Hoel (DD-533) ~ October 25th
U.S.S. Johnston (DD-557) ~ October 25th
U.S.S. Princeton (CVL-23) ~ October 24th
U.S.S. Samuel B. Roberts (DE-413) ~ October 25th
U.S.S. St. Lo (CVE-63) ~ October 25th

The Japanese losses were:

1 fleet carrier, 3 light carriers, 3 battleships, 10 cruisers, 11 destroyers and approximately 12,500 seaman.
