Joseph served as a Private, 59th Coast Artillery Regiment, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Grafton County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on February 8, 1941, prior to the war, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a mechanic and also as Single, without dependents.

Joseph "Died While A POW' of the Japanese Army. He was originally held at Pw Camp 8, Bachrach Garage, Manila, Luzon, Philippines during World War II.

On October 11, 1944 Joseph, along with approx. 1,782 other POW's, was loaded on the Japanese vessel Arisan Maru. On October 24, 1944 the Arisan Maru was sunk by torpedo's from the U.S.S. Shark which was unaware that the ship was transporting American Prisoner's of War.

The sinking of the Arisan Maur was the largest loss of American lives in a single disaster at sea during the war.

Joseph was awarded the Prisoner of War Medal and the Purple Heart.
