James served as a Private, 28th Materiel Squadron, 20th Air Base Group, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Strafford County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on October 8, 1940, prior to the war, in Concord, New Hampshire. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Salesperson and also as Single, without dependents.

He was taken prisoner in the capture of the Bataan Peninsula & Corregidor, Philippine Islands in April & May, 1942.

James "Died While A POW" of the Japanese Army in the Philippines during the war. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
