John served as a Coxswain, USS Ticonderoga (CV-14), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Coos County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

John was declared "Missing In Action" when the Ticonderoga was hit by a Japanese kamikaze in the South China Sea during the war. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
