Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until March 9, 1946.

Gayle served as a First Lieutenant & Pilot on B-24L #44-41422, 371st Bomber Squadron, 307th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Caddo County, Oklahoma prior to the war.

B-24L #44-41422 took off, with a crew of 10, from Kornasoren Airdrome, Noemfoor, Schouten Islands, Indonesia on a bombing mission. They were contacted once by radio and were not seen nor heard from again. The entire crew was lost.

Gayle was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster.

Gayle also has a "Cenotaph" in the Fairview Cemetery, Apache, Oklahoma.
