William Benton Hipp served aboard the USS President Jackson during the Solomon Islands campaign. He was part of a detachment assigned to temporary duty with the 2nd Marine Regiment stationed at Tulagi.

On 9 August 1942, Hipp was put in charge of a Higgins "Eureka" landing craft carrying 2 Platoon, Baker Company, 2nd Marines from Tulagi to Aola. His craft was being towed behind YP-284 when it capsized and sank.

The three crewmen aboard (including Hipp) were drowned, along with fifteen Marines.
