Having gone missing on the above date, Richard was not declared as "officially" dead by the military until January 24, 1946.

Son of Mrs. Mary Friend who resided in Rochester, New Hampshire.

Richard served as a Technical Sergeant & Radar Operator / Gunner on B-24D #42-41043, 63rd Bomber Squadron, 43rd Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on July 16, 1942 in Manchester, New Hampshire. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Foremen and also as Single, without dependents.

Richard was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-24 was believed to have been shot down by enemy aircraft and crashed into the sea off southern New Britain in the Gasmata area during the war. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
