Joseph served as a Second Lieutenant & Pilot on B-25H #unknown, 69th Bomber Squadron, 42nd Bomber Group, Medium, U.S. Army Air Force.

He resided in Atlantic County, New Jersey prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on January 23, 1942 in Trenton, New Jersey. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Electrician and also as Single, without dependents.

This B-25, with a crew of six and one other B-25, took off from Banika Field, Solomon Islands on a combat mission over Buka Island, Papua New Guinea. On this mission they were tasked with testing a new style of gun. Col. Green was observing the effectiveness of the gun.

Over the northern section of the island this B-25 attacked a suspected enemy bivouac and was hit by anti-aircraft fire and crashed into the sea approximately five miles west of Cape Hanpan. Four crew members were lost and two were later rescued.

Joseph was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster.
