Son of Joseph Campo who resided in West Newark, New Jersey.

John served as a Sergeant & Radio Operator / Gunner on B-25G #42-64705, 75th Bomber Squadron, 42nd Bomber Group, Medium, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Hudson County, New Jersey prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on January 27, 1942 in Newark, New Jersey. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a structural and ornamental metal worker and also as Single, without dependents.

B-25G #42-64705 took off, with a crew of 6 and other B-25's, from Stirling Airfield, Western Providence, Solomon Islands on a combat mission over Rabaul, East New Britain Province, Papua New Guinea.

They encountered a strong weather front that included large clouds and intense "updrafts" within the system. After going into the clouds B-25G #42-64705 was not seen nor heard from again. The entire crew was lost and are believed to have crashed into the sea.

John was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal with 5 Oak Leaf Cluster and the Purple Heart.
