He was promoted to the rank of First Lieutenant posthumously on July 25, 1945.
B-24D #41-11902 took off, with a crew of 10, from Iron Range Airfield, Queensland Australia on a bombing mission over Rabaul Harbor, East New Britain Province, Papua New Guinea.
After take off this B-24 was not heard from nor seen again and is believed to have crashed into the sea possibly due to bad weather that was reported in the area or being shot down once reaching the target.
John was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.
He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
