Roland served as a Corporal & Asst. Radio Operator / Gunner on B-24D #42-40217, 372nd Bomber Squadron, 307th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on June 18, 1942 in Manchester, New Hampshire. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in the manufacture of boots and shoes and also as Single, without dependents.

B-24D #42-40217 took off from Carney Field on Guadalcanal on a bombing mission against Kahili Airfield on southern Bougainville along with 23 other bombers.

After releasing their bombs B-24D #42-40217 was attacked by possibly a Japanese Zero causing damage to the #1 & #2 engines and they crashed into the sea during the war.

Roland was declared "Missing In Action" in this attack.

He was awarded the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.

Roland also has a "Cenotaph" in the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen, New Hampshire.
