Son of Mrs. Mary Balwierczak who resided in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Joseph served as a Seaman Second Class, U.S.S. Monssen (DD-436), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Hudson County, New Jersey prior to the war.

Joseph was declared "Missing In Action" in the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal during the war.

The Monssen was spotlighted and then hit by some 39 shells, including 3 of battleship caliber, and reduced to a burning hulk and sank in Ironbottom Sound.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
