Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until December 13, 1945, 1 year and 1 day after he went missing as was the custom.

James served as a Corporal & Radio Operator on C-47A #43-30745, 21st Squadron, 374th Troop Carrier Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Morris County, New Jersey prior to the war.

C-47A #43-30745 took off from Biak, Island, Papua New Guinea on a operational mission to Finschhafen, Papua New Guinea. They are believed to have crashed at sea for an unknown reason during the war.

James was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash.
