William Laurel Peters, his brother, Robert, and his sister, Lois, were the only children of Laurel and Ethelyn Peters. William was born on July 30, 1922, in Custer, South Dakota where he attended school and graduated in 1940. After graduating from high school, he enrolled in primary flight training at Spearfish, South Dakota in the Air Corps Reserve. He was then sent to Des Moines, Iowa, for secondary flight training and ground school work. During all of this training, he received awards for expert rifleman in carbine and pistol shooting.
Bill Peters enlisted in the Army on October 10, 1942. He was sent to Jefferson Barracks in Missouri for his basic training. In addition to that, Bill was trained to become and engineer. He was stationed at several camps in California before being sent overseas to the Philippines on July 23, 1944. Bill was ranked as a Private First Class, and he was in the 382nd Infantry Regiment in the 96th Infantry Division.
Private First Class William Laurel Peters was killed in action during the invasion of Leyte Island, Philippines, on October 28, 1944. A letter sent to his parents from one of his friends who referred to himself as only John was published in the Custer Chronicle. In it, John said, "Your son is one who is hard to express in words. He was superior mentally, physically, socially, and spiritually. His ability as a soldier coincides with his other virtues. I have met few that are the man he was."
William Peters in buried at Manila American Cemetery in Manila, Philippines. He was awarded the Purple Heart for his heroic service. Survivors at the time of his death included his parents, Laurel and Ethelyn; his brother, Bob; his sister, Lois; and his two grandmothers, Myla K. Peters of Sylvan Lake and Lila Rowden of Hill City.
