Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until October 25, 1945, 1 year and 1 day after he went missing as was the custom.

William served as a Aviation Radioman Third Class & Radio Operator / Gunner on a Grumman TBF Avenger, Torpedo Squadron Twenty-Nine (VT-29), U.S.S. Cabot (CVL-28), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Blackville, South Carolina prior to the war.

William was declared "Missing In Action" when his plane, while in a torpedo attack on the Japanese Fleet in Tablas Straight, Philippines, was shot down and is believed to have crashed at sea. Their remains were not recovered.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
