Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until January 7, 1946.

Thomas served as a First Lieutenant & Navigator on B-25D #41-29708, 71st Bomber Squadron, 38th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Shelby County, Tennessee prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on January 3, 1942 in Jackson, Mississippi. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in the Laundry occupation and also as Single, without dependents.

B-25D #41-29708 took off, with a crew of 7 and other B-25's, from 17 Mile Drome, Central Province, Papua New Guinea on a shipping strike off Buna, Oro Province, Papua New Guinea.

They are believed to have been hit by anti-aircraft fire causing them to ditch in the sea during the war. The entire crew was lost.

Thomas was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
