Parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Joseph Lamphere, Underhill Center, Vt.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He resided in Underhill, Chittenden County, Vermont prior to the war.

On February 27, 1942 the U.S.S. Langley (CV-1) had been so badly damaged by Japanese dive bombers that she had to be scuttled by her own escorts.

The U.S.S. Whipple (DD-217) picked up the Langley survivors and on the next day, February 28, they were transferred to the U.S.S. Pecos (AO-6).

Fayette was a survivor of the Langley and was now on the Pecos.

On March 1st, the Pecos was sunk by a Japanese air attack from the planes on the aircraft carrier Sōryū & aircraft carrier Kaga. The Whipple arrived shortly after the sinking and picked up 231 survivors from the Pecos.
