Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until January 18, 1946.

George's remains were found in 1998 and recovered and identified in 1999. He was interred in the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.

He also has a "Cenotaph" with his parents in the Resurrection Cemetery, Montebello, California.

A "Rosette" was placed in front of his name here at Manila to signify that his remains were recovered.

George served as a First Lieutenant & Pilot on P-47D #42-22896, 41st Fighter Squadron, 35th Fighter Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Dane County, Wisconsin prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army on March 26, 1942 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Telephone operator and also as Single, without dependents.

He was married after his enlistment to Ruth Laurene Christensen. They had one child together, Patricia Susan Gaffney Kindig.

George was declared "Missing In Action" when he did not return from a mission to his base at Gusap Airfield during the war. He had crashed, as it was later discovered, near Sawan village in the Finisterre Mountains.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
