He was the birth son of Henry Arthur Alcock/Alcox (1875-1956) and Frances E. Corprew (1878-1914). His birth name was Albert Sydney Alcock or Albert Sydney Alcox.

He was the adopted son of Edward Harrold French (1881-1965) and Sennie A. Register (1879-1944). His adopted name was Albert Sydney French.

On 25 February 1933 in the City of Norfolk, Virginia, he married Evelyn Dorothy Wilde (1910-1990).

In 1935, he and his family are living in Long Beach, Los Angeles County, California according to the 1940 Census.

In 1940, he and his family are living in a rented home for $20.00 per month at 4505 College Avenue, City of Norfolk, Virginia. His name is noted as Albert S. French. He is age 35, born about 1905 in North Carolina. He is a Chief Naval Petty Officer. Also living with them are his wife’s parents, and her maternal grandmother. On 9 August 1942, he along with 369 other souls perished in the bombing and sinking of the U. S. S. Quincy (CA-39) by the Japanese at the Battle of Savo Island.
