Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until December 1, 1943, 1 year after he went missing as was the custom. The Battle of Tassafaronga started on November 30, 1942, 40 minutes before mid-night, which leads to confusion concerning the date.

Stanley served as a Seaman First Class, U.S.S. Northampton (CA-26), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Sheridan County, Wyoming prior to the war.

Richard was declared "Missing In Action" when the Northampton was struck by two torpedoes, which tore a huge hole in her port side, ripping away decks and bulkheads and sank in the Battle of Tassafaronga during the war.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.

Service # 3686113

The U.S.S. Northampton was the only ship lost during the battle and received six battle stars for World War II service.
