John served as a Aviation Radioman, Second Class, USS Lexington (CV-2), U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Bristol, Addison County, Vermont prior to the war.

John was declared "Missing In Action" when the Lexington, after repeated attacks by Japanese aircraft, had a series of explosions and fires that could not be controlled, and had to be scuttled by an American destroyer during the evening of May 8th to prevent her capture.

John could have also quite possibly been shot down during flight based on being awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

He was awarded the "Distinguished Flying Cross" and the Purple Heart.
