During World War II, Wade R. Cothran served as a major in the Army. Assigned to Headquarters Company of the Luzon Force in Bataan in the Philippine Islands, he was taken prisoner of war by the Japanese in May 1942 in the fall of Bataan. He survived the Bataan death march, but died on 23 January 1945 while aboard a Japanese ship being taken to Japan. His name is memorialized on the marker at Fort William Mckinley, Manila, the Philippines. He was awarded the Silver Star Medal, Bronze Star Medal, and additional Army Awards.
He married:
1) Lilla Mitchell m. 17 November 1927, who died in 1932. A daughter by this marriage died young of polio.
2) Helen Arinda Leas, m. in Manila 21 October 1932
