James served as a First Lieutenant, 28th Materiel Squadron, 20th Air Base Group, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Chittenden County, Vermont prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on October 9, 1940, prior to the war, in Montpelier, Vermont. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in the production of bakery products and also as Single, without dependents.

He was taken prisoner in the capture of the Bataan Peninsula & Corregidor, Philippine Islands in April & May, 1942.

James "Died While A POW" of the Japanese Army in the Japanese POW Osaka Main Camp, Chikko, Osaka 34-135 during the war.

He was awarded the Prisoner of War Medal and the Purple Heart.
