Ralph served as a Technical Sergeant & Asst. Engineer / Gunner on B-24J #42-100196, 33rd Bomber Squadron, 22nd Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.
He resided in Halifax County, Virginia prior to the war.
He enlisted in the Army on June 13, 1942 in Richmond, Virginia. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in the manufacture of textiles and also as Single, without dependents.
B-24J #42-100196 took off, with a crew of 11, from Biak Island (APO 920), Papua Province, Indonesia on a combat mission over Padada, Davao del Sur Providence, Mindanao, Philippine Islands.
Over the target they were hit in their #3 & #4 engines by ground anti-aircraft fire and headed out to sea. Lt. Lint, Pilot, was in contact with another B-24 in the group. He sent out a final message: "through sending messages and ditching." They ditched in the Davao Gulf off Santa Marie.
Ralph was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.
He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
