James Burgess Cenotaph Here

James Osgood Burgess was the son of Osgood Miller Burgess of Birmingham, Ala., and Mrs. Bessie May Stovall Bass, and brother to John Stovall Burgess, who both resided in Munford, Tenn.


He attended Munford High School in Munford, Tipton County, Tenn., and was a member of the MHS Class of 1941.


He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on April 21, 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Financial institution clerk and also as Single, without dependents.


James served as a Second Lieutenant and Co-Pilot on B-25D-1 "Hell's Fire" #41-30278, 500th Bomber Squadron, 345th Bomber Group, Medium, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.


B-25D #41-30278 took off, with a crew of 6 and other B-25's, on a strike mission over the Sulawesi, Indonesia area.


They were shot down by Japanese fighter aircraft and crashed at the base of Mount Tongkoko north of Sulawesi, Indonesia.


James was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash during the war.


He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.

James' remains were the only ones not found from the entire crew.
