Frederick served as a First Lieutenant & Flight Engineer on B-29 "Round Robin Rosie" #42-6300, 677th Bomber Squadron, 444th Bomber Group, Very Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.
He resided in Norfolk, Virginia prior to the war.
B-29 #42-6300 took off, with a crew of 11 & 95 other B-29's, from Chengtu, China on a bombing mission over Omura, Japan. The group was radioed and requested to return to base due to bad weather. 29 of the 96 B-29's did not receive the recall transmission and continued on the mission. 5 of the B-29's were lost on this mission.
B-29 #42-6300, which was one of the 5 that was lost, after a successful bombing attack and while returning to base was last seen leaving the formation, for an unknown reason, with all engines running. They were last heard on the radio trying to contact a U.S. Submarine ... possibly because they had ditched into the sea. They were not seen nor heard from again. The entire crew was lost on this mission.
Frederick was declared "Missing In Action" on this mission during the war.
He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
