Charles' remains were recovered & identified in November, 1980 and he is now interred in the Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Charles served as a First Lieutenant, 67th Fighter Squadron, 347th Fighter Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.
He resided in Olmsted County, Minnesota prior to the war.
He enlisted in the Army Air Corps as a Private on April 17, 1942 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Mail carrier and also as Single, without dependents.
Charles was a passenger on P-38H #42-66562
Charles was declared "Missing In Action" when the P-38 he was a passenger on, which took off from Nadzab Airfield No. 1 with three P-47s, was believed to have crashed due to bad weather during the war.
His status was changed to "Killed In Action" after his remains were recovered.
Charles was awarded the Air Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster.
