Carpenter was the pilot of B-24J #42-73222, nicknamed 'Bugs Bunny', serving with the 10th Air Force, 7th Bombardment Group, 9th Bombardment Squadron. They were part of a formation of B-24s on a bombing mission to Insein, Burma, near Rangoon. Fierce enemy opposition of anti-aircraft fire and fighter planes was encountered. Carpenter's plane was shot down during the air battle.

Carpenter was from Goodhue County, MN. His parents were Harry William Carpenter and Louise Adeline (Strack) Carpenter. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Purple Heart.

Because his body was not recovered, he is memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing.
