Son of Wallace B. Wood who resided in Miami, Florida.

Robert served as a First Lieutenant & Pilot on C-47 #41-18661, 21st Squadron, 374th Troop Carrier Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He was normally assigned to the 46th Squadron, 317th Troop Carrier Group but was assigned as the Pilot for this flight.

He resided in Dade County, Florida prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on September 10, 1942 at Camp Blanding, Florida. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a mechanic and also as Single, without dependents.

C-47 #41-18661 took off, with a crew of 4 and 1 passenger, from Dobodura Airfield, Oro Province, Papua New Guinea on a cargo mission to Port Moresby, National Capital District, Papua New Guinea.

They crashed, for an unknown reason, near Lake Myola, Central Province, Papua New Guinea. There is some indications that they may have been shot down by Japanese forces in the area.

Robert was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash during the war.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
